My Review
It was such a long long time since I felt this ways towards a book. It was like a long lost love found and rekindled by the surreal feeling of the written word.
I'm a very picky reader and I tend to watch and read reviews first before I let myself buy the book. Well, aside from the occasional impulse buying, mainly because of eye-candy or drool-worthy covers.
I picked up Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (also the second and third books altogether) for the reason being that it was so hyped up in the book community that I just couldn't afford to pass it up. It was all over the booktubing and book blogging community that it triggered that curiosity in me. Plus factor that the cover is so gorgeously bad ass.
This was the first ever high fantasy book that I read and very very very much loved and recommend it. I know so little about the book when I read it, aside from the fact that it was so hyped about and of course that it was about a bad ass female assassin.
Main plot:
The story follows a girl named Celaena Sardothien the world's most notorious assassin. She was put on a death-camp to work as a lifetime punishment for the crimes she committed. However she was offered a second chance at freedom. The king will host a contest to find a champion who will work for him and be at his disposal, in which after the term of their agreement is over, that champion can live freely.
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
Characters:
Celaena Sardothien is such a witty, sarcastic, bad ass, headstrong female protagonist that you will find yourself rooting for every single time. Her train of thoughts is just so filled with arrogance and sarcasm which is so entertaining especially when she voices it out freely with the other characters. It's such a wonder how Sarah J. Maas can make Celaena into this normal young girl who obsesses over dresses and jewelries and then in a snap of a finger turns into a girl who is very much known to be as a killing machine. We see that two sides of her character in this book that makes me love her even more. She is just about as normal, as vulnerable and as human as everybody else. She cries and bleeds just like everybody else. Her character at times is just so twisted, so damned that for me she is forced to lead a life of killing in order for her to survive. The cruelty of life and the complexities of fate forced her into being a heartless assassin. And I know for a fact that if she has a choice she would have taken a different path. A path far from blood staining hands.
Chaol Westfall the captain of the guards at such a young age. He is a very serious and strict man. He who takes great pride, honor, loyalty and allegiance to his country. He is such a strong character wherein he usually is that one man whom girls take refuge on and depend on. He makes it look like he can protect you and defend you. (Not that Celaena needs protecting. Haha.) He had this certain aura in him that I just can't quite put my hands on. I love him so much for Celaena. (Sorry Dorian and Dorian fans.) The way he looks at Celaena, the way he is distant and reserved makes me all the more eager all the more excited for them to be together. I love every little scenes he had with Celaena in this book. When they had their early runs, their sparring sessions, their breakfast and lunch together, their book reading at the castle's library, the gift scene and their oh so hot arguments and petty fights. And everything. Just about everything about them. And that scene at the last test where he is on the other end of the circled line like he wants to touch and protect her badly. The feels!
Dorian Havilliard the crown prince a handsome young man, a pompous and a tease to all the women of the court is such a funny character. He is such a flirt but not in the irritating kind of way but more of in a funny way especially when it comes to getting his hands on Celaena. And the nonstop sarcastic tirade with Celaena is just so hilarious and entertaining. I swear it made me really confused on who I like better for Celaena. He made it so hard as a competition for Chaol. (Not that they are competing for her love in this book.) He is also a witty character and his love for books and dogs just made him all the more lovable. His scenes with Celaena the way the two of them open up to each other, the way they have long talks and their nonstop banter, kissing and cuddling also made me much much more in love with his character. The character development for him in this book is so good that from a self-righteous prince he learns to open up and see the world clearly from a different angle. And when he said that he will fight for Celaena made me want to pat a hand on his back. So needless to say I'll be happy even when after the last book of this series Celaena chooses Dorian.
I know that we will be in for a roller coaster ride of emotions in this series. The characters are there for a purpose. Every word, every scene, every character has a part in this greatness. All the characters in this book are so lovable even the most evil ones. The character development in this book is so great that it just makes them stand out more and more and be a different character of their own.
And I haven't been this torn so madly torn with two guys for a female protagonist. The love triangle is just there looming and waiting for it to explode. There is this great uncertainty as to whom our main heroine will choose or if she will ever choose. And the love in this book is not even the main focus of the book, it's just a side dish. There are a lot of sick and twisted things happening in this book that is yet to be discovered.
I was so fascinated so drawn and so immersed into this book. The world building is just so great. It didn't lack on the aspect of explaining how things are or how their world is so hideous and so beautiful all at the same time. The words are strewn so effortlessly, so gracefully that it flows smoothly. And I know for a fact that Sarah J. Maas poured her heart and soul into this very book. I can see it and feel it in this book. And I know for a fact that this series is destined for greatness.
